Lake Isabelle Elopement — David & Natalie
Lake Isabelle Elopement in the Colorado Mountains
I just about flipped when we found this view. Just a little over an hour from Denver, Lake Isabelle is definitely a breathtaking backdrop. Particularly for couples seeking a picturesque elopement. Lake Isabelle is surrounded by mountains with that meadow feel, and of course those pristine waters!
Definitely an ideal location for an intimate and minimal elopement. Let me help with a few practical tips for eloping outdoors in the Colorado mountains.
The little creek and waterfall that crosses the path was the first little photo spot that we HAD to take advantage of.
There’s so many questions I’d probably have if I was planning my elopement at Lake Isabelle, so let me be a little proactive and try to answer some of them!
Here’s what I’ll give you with in this post…

Best month to elope at Lake Isabelle.
Choosing the right month totally depends on your ideal setting for your elopement. Lake Isabelle truly wears each season beautifully, but there are definitely some pros and cons to each season.
Summer
The summer months (June to August) boast vibrant wildflowers and milder temperatures. And that waterfall I mentioned, well there’s multiple of them and they will all be gushing. If running around in lush green meadows is your thing, then this may just be your season to visit.
Fall
If you really would prioritize avoiding crowds, then you may prefer to consider eloping at Lake Isabelle in the Fall. In the months of September to October, the golden colors begin to pop out and the crowds start to thin. But it’s good to be aware that they start draining the Lake in mid-September so depending on when you visit, the water level may be lower in your photos. Since the weather tends to get iffy in the later months of the year, at some point they close the gate to the upper trailheads in the late Fall.
Winter
If winter is your thing, then you should be aware that the hike will be longer since you will have to start from the lower lots and trailhead. I generally wouldn’t recommend this but I wanted you to have the info just in case you had your heart set on a wintery elopement!
What to know about the hike…
The journey to Lake Isabelle is a scenic adventure, and being prepared for the hike is essential. The Pawnee Pass Trail is a popular choice, featuring a gradual ascent with breathtaking views. The hike from Pawnee Pass Trailhead generally only takes you roughly between 1 to 2 hours depending on the season, but ensure you pack essentials like water, snacks, proper footwear, and layers to adapt to changing mountain weather. Checking trail conditions, considering your fitness level, and allowing ample time for the hike will make your journey as memorable as the destination. Basically, bring the essentials and don’t rush it. You want to enjoy your elopement day!
Once you’re at the top you will have to change into your dress and suit. I always bring along my pop-up changing tent for my couples, but you should double check with your photographer what their plan is.
Okay, now let’s talk about lodging.
Lodging options are available in nearby cities Nederland, Boulder, or Denver. I always recommend looking for Airbnbs. I just love the uniqueness and coziness they can bring!
Here are a few I’ve found that are nearby that you may want to check out. After finding these, I think I may just have to visit some of them myself. They look so GORGEOUS!
Ned Vintage Vista in Nederland, CO
Peak to Peak Retreat in Nederland, CO
Mountain Getaway with Breathtaking Views in Boulder, CO
Sunny Mountain Home in Boulder, CO
Magnolia Mountain Getaway in Nederland, CO
Stone House on the Creek in Boulder, CO

Whatever you choose, be sure to book it far in advance or else most opportunities will start to disappear!
Does Lake Isabelle require a permit to get married at?
As of my last knowledge on February 2024, a permit is not required specifically for eloping at Lake Isabelle so long as you have less than 8 people (including you, your photographer, videographer, and all guests) and no vendors besides your photographer and videographer. But it's important to check with the local authorities and the U.S. Forest Service for any updates or changes. Always adhere to Leave No Trace principles and respect the natural environment while celebrating your special day. You do however have to have an access permit for the Brainard Lake Recreation area in order to access the Long Lake Trailhead.
Can I invite guests to my Lake Isabelle elopement?
Yes a few, so long as the total number of people is not greater than 8. If you have 8-12 people you will need to get a larger group pass for the area for $11 available at recreation.gov.
I think the thought of having just a few of your most special people there as witnesses is beautiful but so is having a private ceremony with just the two of you. You can’t go wrong. Just take time to consider your priorities and what you value.
Another option would be to have just the two of you hike up privately to exchange vows and then returning to Brainard lake where your family and friends are waiting to celebrate altogether afterwards. Just get creative. There’s no right or wrong beyond what excites you most.
Is sunrise or sunset better to elope at Lake Isabelle?
Both sunrise and sunset offer their own magical ambiance at Lake Isabelle. Sunrise bathes the landscape in soft, golden hues, creating a tranquil and intimate atmosphere then allows you to have the rest of the day to take photos, explore, and celebrate. On the other hand, sunset finishes your day with warm, vibrant colors and the chance to capture the lake's reflections. Consider your personal preferences and the mood you wish to convey for the exchanging of vows.
Either way, chances are you may be hiking through dusk or dawn as it’s getting darker. So bring plenty of flashlights and know your path just in case.
